The purpose of the paper is to increase understanding, and develop skills in interpersonal communication leadership so that you can use these understanding and skills to facilitate effective communication in dyadic and small group relations. You will learn skills to become a more effective communicator and facilitator, with particular reference to workplace and organisational contexts. Many of the principles and concepts are also applicable in other contexts.

There are three modules covered in the course: facilitate self, facilitate another, and facilitate group. Major topics will include the principles and practices of effective facilitation, the layers and complexities of verbal and non-verbal communication, focused conversation method, dynamics of small group and team communication, emotion management, and diversity management.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Learning outcomes:
    1. Explain and apply communication and facilitation theories and concepts, and explore their implications for the practice; (Assessed by Assignments 1, 2, 3 and 4)
    2. Draw upon and apply knowledge of interpersonal and small group communication to conduct structured, facilitated conversations; (Assessed by Assignments 1, 2 and 3)
    3. Practise, reflect upon, and refine own facilitation skills; (Assessed by Assignments 1, 2, and 3)
    4. Analyse interpersonal small group communication interactions in workplace, business, and social contexts. (Assessed by Assignments 1, 2 and 3)

Learning hours for this course are 150 hours over 15 weeks. Consider learning hours to be the total of class time and your own time. Therefore, you should expect to spend four hours each week in class, and six hours each week outside of class. Outside of class time you are expected to complete the readings, re-view video clips, prepare and complete assignments, and carry out other learning activities as required.
